This makes it abundantly clear that the head monk, due to his connection with this woman, "fired Desmond" so that he could fulfill his calling, as she tells Desmond himself he must do later on.

Now for opinions, I believe this woman does have ESP or else she wouldn't go through all this trouble of getting him stranded on the island because WHY poor random Desmond if what she wanted was to use him (if for example she was connected to Dharma and wanted him on that island, for example)?

Here's another possibility: perhaps the ESP woman saw Penny as part of Desmond's destiny. Not as the end but as the means to arrive to his destiny which was to get on that boat and crash on that island. So, it could be very possible that the head monk called Penny to come by the monastary, fired Desmond on the night before she arrived and then suggested him helping with the crates to get a ride back in order to push him along towards his Destiny which he knows includes her.

I get the feeling we will be seeing the head monk again in a flashback early on next season if not, in the finale this season, and this will come to light for those average viewers that didn't catch the picture frame connection.
Well, it seems obvious that the ESP Lady is somehow connected to the Island. Whether it's another manifestation of the Island or not, the picture on the head monk's desk is proof that she is real. Therefore, it makes me believe that they were guiding Desmond to Penny, so he would eventually end up on the Island to do his part. Which was to turn the key; or so it would seem.

Whether or not the ESP Lady invaded Desmond's flashbacks into something else is another matter I suppose.

I don't know about you, but I didn't know Desmond spoke Korean and, during times of stress, your brain doesn't start to spew out new words from a foreign language you may/may not have learned. You speak what you know.

Interesting.
What??? I don't remember him speaking Korean. I'm gonna have to go back an watch that.

“Not yet”

Again - all the “Free Will” choices that our Losties have made are not Free Will at all. All the coincidences they’ve experienced are not coincidences at all. It’s a giant game of “Mousetrap”, where one thing leads to another to finally achieve a goal that’s been foreseen by The Conspiracy long ago.

I was just going back and rewatching season 3 and came to this episode. I think the photoshopped pic was done on purpose so we would see it. I missed it the first time and I noticed on this thread many people did not. Having seen up to season 5 we now know this ESP woman to be Eloise Hawking, mother of Daniel Faraday and former leader of the Others. She shot and killed her son in 1977 and recieved a notebook of facts of the future. Her connection with the Head Monk makes him an Other. They saw that he was going to marry someone that wasn't to be in his future, so they drugged him, dragged him out into the street so the Head Monk can bring him into the monestary. He learns patience long enough until he has to meet Penny. They contact Ruth's brother to come and give him a good socking to get him on the path of being booted out so he could meet Penny.

OR The Future-seeing Conspiracy knew which section of the plane would "remain intact" (how?) and made a point of packing that section with promising candidates. Note that Shannon and Boone were "supposed" to be in First Class; note also how frantic Cindy and crew became when Charlie went to the front of the plane and that of the Tailies, Bernard is the only current survivor.

Either way - good question - and maybe we'll get an answer one of these days.
This is interesting to note. Lapidas was supposed to be pilot of 815. In the first episode, the pilot got ate by the smokey monster, like he wasn't supposed to be there. If Lapidas did fly the plane, he would be alive and not eaten because he was supposed to survive.

So my question now is, Was the flight attendant, Cindy, an Other all along? Did she know they were going to crash and didn't want Charlie on the wrong side of the plane? She seemed very Other-like when she met with Jack near the cages.

Okay. That was two questions and a statement.
