Faraday's Constant = Desmond Hume

Old member, long time since I posted due to almost losing faith in the show until the Season 3 finale.

I am aboard with everyone else who thinks Faraday is time traveling. It would explain why he was crying when watching the news footage of the crash, when he was acting weird on the copter before he parachuted, why he has trouble remembering the playing cards, and why he sent Desmond to meet him. The show hints at it when the past Faraday says a remark about exposure to radiation, after the present Faraday explains the situation to present Desmond.

What about Smokie? I'm thinking that maybe the smoke monster is there to help provide a constant to everyone. Hurley has Dave show up on the island. Jack has his dad show up. Kate has a black horse from her past show up. And so on. I'm sure there are many other examples that we can come up with.

Smokie zeros in on a person, reads their thoughts, and pulls a familiar object out of their memory and recreates it.

I can't explain why it killed Mr. Ecko, but I think Smokie is actually a good thing. There has to be a conection between Smokie & the 'constants'.

Interesting.. The strange thing is though however, is that all these people that are created out of the smoke monsters manifestations, all these people are dead.. It would seem awkward for the smoke monster to be a constant for any of these terrified survivors, not to mention Mr Ekos final words "You're Next".. BTW was he implying that message to Locke?. since the only thing that Locke cares about is finding out the secrets to the island? the secret behind the monster? isn't the smoke some form of Jacob?, then I think of "Taller Ghost Walt" and I get really confused.. Why did it kill Eko BTW? I don't know, but I recall the smoke monster in the apparition of his brother, the only person Eko really cared about, hence his brother being the applicant for Mr Ekos constant if ever he were to have one. But then it transforms to smoke & then kills him! The smoke monster is too sinister to act upon good, then again who am I to judge. I think it would be nice if the smoke monster acted in that way for the good of one of the losties, if ever it was to act as a constant.. the smoke monster is no joke.. It only acts when there's a lot of tension centered around something, and that could be anything..

A constant is someone who is the same for you in both times. Penny is Penny in the past and future, so Desmond needed someone who was there for him in both times. Same for Faraday. Now that the future has sent Desmond to his past ( now making a new future ), Faraday knows Desmond from both times...he is a "constant"....something always the same.

Ok I’ve read almost ALL of the thread up until a few pages…Thanks for the great read, and the few hours I got off of work Sorry I haven't gotten to the most recent...need to post before I leave work!!

Ok here are some thought (a bit incoherent)

#Charlie was exposed to radiation when Desmond was exposed- am I grabbing at blank straws hoping that a this new ep. could somehow change the fate of Charlie?!!

# This was already mentioned, but why wouldn’t Dan just tell Desmond about the constant when he was on the phone? If Dan KNEW it would work, wouldn’t he have just explained to Desmond about a constant? This makes me think he doesn’t know it’ll work…therefore, he sends Desmond to him since he knows he’d confirm it by writing it in the journal.

#Also, please correct me if I’m wrong, but Des and Dan met on the island prior to them leaving in the helicopter. If you can’t change the future, than Dan would have known about the helicopter, what’s to come, and would have recognized Des. If Des IS his constant, wouldn’t he want Des to be perfectly safe at all times to grantee his (Dan’s) survivability? …unless, Des’s trip in the helicopter, going back in time is needed for him to be Dan’s constant…AH! My brain is about to implode!

#Changing the past MUST change the future. We know it must change the future since the rat died. Regardless of training and such, the rat died due to circumstances related to this time travel (or so we’re lead to believe). In SOME way, this changes the future…I liked what one poster said about it not being the future, but yet changing the present. When Dan said “You can’t change the future”, perhaps it’s more of a saying, like “what’s done is done”.

#I think you guys are correct about Dan zapping in and out of the present/past/future/90210. Dan crying in front of the TV must be related to this. Perhaps he’s not crying ABOUT the plane crash, perhaps he transfers in the midst of something which involved him crying. Perhaps something on the island!?!

#And the other “sick” people on the boat. It would be interesting to know if these people were also exposed to radiation, if so, how, when, with what, and why! Someone mentioned that Dan could have done experiments on them, but would the level of radiation be enough in such a short time (I’m only assuming it’s only a short time they’ve been on the boat)?

#Someone also mention about the possibility of Dan going further back than 1996, and how would Desmond be his constant? My guess is he would try to find Desmond such as Penny did…but Desmond doesn’t know him…I mean…that just opens a whole can of worms!!!

daniel said that a constant should be someone whom you really cared about... that is why des, thought of Pen as his constant. then why is Desmond, Daniel's constant??? And if Desmond is Daniel's contant, why can't Daniel be Desmond's constant?

That is why Daniel asked Desmond to go to his place in 1996 because the Daniel of 2004 wanted Desmond to be his constant.

It works this way:

Daniel knew that Desmond was 'time traveling', so he asked him to go to his lab back in 1996, when he was doing a research that is so dear to his life. He asked Desmond to convince Daniel of 1996 that he knows something about the research (11Hz blah blah). Daniel of 1996 then told Desmond everything he knew back then. This made Daniel of 1996 connected to Desmond of 1996, even if not in a romantic way. Desmond of 1996 mattered to Daniel of 1996 because he was a concrete example of his research. Now, Daniel of 2004 is connected to Desmond of 2004 via the island, so if he decides to return to the freighter and the same phenomenon happens to him, he would have Desmond as his constant.

Daniel used desmond because he needed desmond to meet his past self to be his constant, i dont know if anyone has mentioned this but ill say it anyways: evidence towards this is when past daniel said, "Why would i put you through the headache of timetravel, why couldnt i just help you there, in the future". I know he was being sarcastic but i think the writers added it in to make us think, well thats my view, anyone else got anything?
