I think this is a cool theory. Rather than the bomb sinking the island, it reacted with the energy. Without the Losties OR the bomb, the pocket of energy is hit and the hatch is built to contain it. But when you add the bomb, this changes the course of events after the energy is released, and that's when everything after that moment alters.

I'm really glad someone said this. Using "logic" would only work if this wasn't scifi. Yes, there's a degree of logic and science being used, but these writers can do whatever they like because we aren't being limited by the laws of reality.

What do you think? Is the island always prepared to be underwater?
This is AWESOME. Until i read this comment i put no stock in the theory of the island being underwater at all. But i'm rethinking everything now. The only way to get to the island seems to be via boat/ship or submarine.

I don't believe the island has always been underwater, because how would a plane crash on it then? But if it is simply underwater sometimes, and this isn't the first time, then it all makes more sense. Perhaps the event that occured at the worksite with the bomb and energy pocket destroyed whatever forcefield allowed the island to exist underwater, and that is why its flooded now.

I also like to think that one of the times it appeared somewhere new, the Black Rock was sailing in that exact place and suddenly had an island under it.

At least not that one of your universe.
I love this because it accounts for A) the reason the island is whole and underwater, and B) you cannot change the future. Which is something we really need to remember. That was a law established by the writers, especially last season, and they're not abandoning it now.

John Locke said that everyone was brought for a reason, maybe to save the island from been underwater.

I think to ensure the past was changed and they didnt crash, something had to change, or be different from originally, and this is it I feel.

Well it was clearly the island in present time that was underwater. The barracks houses were partly destroyed. Looks exactly like it is now.

I dont know if this has been mentionned but there is an ancient egyptian myth:

In the tale of the shipwrecked sailor, a shipwrecked sailor confronts a monster, specifically a huge serpent on a mysterious and bountiful island, and the monster tells the sailor that once he leaves the island, it will become water and he will not be able to return. The sailor is scared from the monster at first but then the serpent starts helping the sailor survive on the Island.

I subsribe to the theory that the island was always underwater, protected by some kind of 'bubble' that was shattered by some kind of explosion.
It fits in with Desmond's comments in Season 2:
"You think I did it on purpose? I was sailing for two and a half weeks due west, nine knots. I should have been in Fiji in less than a week. But the first piece of land that I saw wasn't Fiji, no. No, it was this island. And do you know why? Because this is it. This is all there is left. We are stuck in a bloody snow globe! There's no outside world, there's no escape!"
